National Night Out August 5th, 2008
SAFETY TIPS
Home Safety
- When leaving home, get in the car, lock the doors, crank the car, and put it into gear prior to raising the garage door.
- If car is parked in the driveway, verify as best you can that it’s safe to exit your home (Remember we never know who has been watching us.)
- Don’t be such a creature of habit.
- When arriving home late, take an extra minute or so to drive past your home to ensure no one is lurking in the shadows before parking and getting out of the car.
- If arriving late, and parking in the garage, still check as above, then pull into the garage but do not turn the engine off or place into park until the door is completely down.
- Ensure you’ve not been followed.
Away From Home
- Make eye contact when approaching person(s)
- Women, when having to be out at night by yourself:
Limit the amount of jewelry you wear.
Limit credit cards and cash.
- If you must purchase gasoline at night, try and do so at a relatively busy station; pay at the pump, and determine if a total fill up is necessary to complete your journey.
- Try to delay using cell phones while walking through parking lots/garages or while sitting in cars with the tops down/off, or the doors open
- When walking/jogging, periodically look behind you to be sure you’re not being followed.
- Before approaching your car, check its surroundings for occupied vehicles; also, look underneath for possible predator.
- Once you and your passenger(s) are in the car, lock the doors, crank the car, put it in gear, and buckle the seat belt(s).
- Develop a plan of action for you and your family should you encounter problems from an attacker, similar to the plan of escape you have in place in the event of a fire in your home.
Listen to you inner voice – it won’t let you down
